Hoax Bomb Threats Force European Flight Diversions and Escorts

A wave of false bomb scares across Europe triggered military fighter jet escorts and extensive runway searches.

Aviation security teams and military forces across Europe were placed on alert after a wave of coordinated hoax bomb threats prompted flight diversions, emergency ground searches and armed fighter jet escorts, AP News reported.

The incidents impacted multiple major commercial carriers, including LOT Polish Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Wizz Air and Ryanair. Specialized counterterrorism units and bomb-disposal squads inspected aircraft across several jurisdictions, but authorities confirmed that no explosive devices were located.

In Italy, the national air force scrambled two Eurofighter interceptor jets following a security alert concerning a flight inbound to Rome from Dublin. A separate flight traveling from Lisbon to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport also landed under security protocols after an email claimed an explosive device was on board. Specialized disposal teams swept the aircraft, baggage and passengers, finding no hazardous materials, AP News further stated.

Similar emergency measures were executed in Poland. A LOT flight departing London’s Heathrow Airport for Warsaw was diverted to Modlin Airport after a threat was received, leading to a temporary suspension of airfield operations while search teams cleared the jet. The publication added that Warsaw Chopin Airport also initiated contingency protocols for an inbound Scandinavian Airlines flight from Copenhagen, briefly shutting down an active runway.

Security officials in Spain inspected a Ryanair flight from Manchester upon its arrival at Murcia Airport. All 121 passengers and crew members underwent screening while security personnel searched the aircraft, with regional authorities verifying no explosives were present, the media outlet confirmed.

In Bulgaria, authorities evaluated two flights arriving at Sofia International Airport from Italy and Ireland after flight crews received warnings mid-route. Both aircraft landed safely and were cleared following sweeps by counterterrorism officers, according to AP News.

The widespread groundings followed an incident involving a Wizz Air flight from London to Hungary, where defense officials deployed a Gripen fighter jet to guide the aircraft into Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport for an emergency inspection that yielded no threat.

AP News said maritime security was also affected after Greek authorities initiated the evacuation and physical search of a cruise ship docked at the island of Syros following a false threat. Port security, divers and canine detection units found no suspicious materials aboard the vessel.
