Nine out of 10 shop owners have experienced fewer thefts and robberies, and increased security for staff since installing video surveillance. This is shown in a survey by the Swedish Retail Institute that has been conducted on behalf of the Swedish Trade Federation in cooperation with Axis Communications.
For years, retail has been the largest vertical market for video surveillance. In fact, a regional fuel service and convenience store chain with more than 1,200 locations will spend $1 million in the fi rst year of a three-year project. A pharmacy chain’s initial order for 80 locations was 1,300 cameras, more than 16 cameras per location. And a major international retailer will spend $15 million for its two-year asset protection and safety program contract extension. There are many reasons why retailers employ video surveillance. Theft is, of course, a prime motivation. American retailers lose billions of dollars per year due to theft from shoppers and employees.

I missed ISC East in 2008, but it has certainly been worth it this year. As always, New York is alive and in full bloom and the tradeshow is bristling with activity. I’m sure glad I’m here.

3VR Security Inc., provider of intelligent surveillance and search, recently announced that customer Union Savings Bank has successfully leveraged 3VR's search-based surveillance and advanced analytics technology to capture 80 times more usable security video and maintain one of the industry's lowest fraud rates.
The video surveillance market is showing limited unit growth in 2009, but still seeing revenue declines as the weak economy takes its toll. However, the impact is greater in some segments than others, according to market research firm, In-Stat.
A recent Harris Poll survey indicates that 96 percent of U.S citizens feel the federal government and law enforcement agencies should be able to use video surveillance in an effort to counteract terrorism and help protect U.S. citizens in specific public places.
