Belgium Airport Adds Explosives Detection Technology

GE Security Inc. recently announced its Homeland Protection business has sold and deployed two TSA-certified CTX 9000 DSi advanced technology explosives detection systems (EDS) to support checked bag screening at Brussels South Charleroi Airport’s recently opened passenger terminal.

The CTX 9000 deployment reinforces GE Security’s strong and growing presence in the European security market and reflects continued global adoption of its market-leading advanced technology, CT-based inline baggage screening solutions.

GE’s CTX 9000s at Brussels South Charleroi Airport provide real-time explosives detection and offer the potential for lower false alarm rates which can translate to lower operational costs as a result of a reduction in bag diversions for manual screening. As a result of its integration with the baggage handling system (BHS), bags can proceed smoothly from passenger check-in to sorting, speeding overall system throughput, which helps reduce the cost per bag and improve flow while expediting the screening process.

“Our airport becomes more accessible each year, and with the new terminal developed to host more flight activity and a growth in passenger volume, we wanted to show that we are serious in offering the highest standards for ease, comfort and security,” said Denis van der Heyden, technical director, Societe Wallone des Aeroports (SOWAER). “Our aim is to become the airport of reference for offering the best value for passengers, airlines, staff, concession holders and the community.”

“GE Security is pleased to provide Brussels South Charleroi Airport with the latest and best security technologies,” said Edwin de Wolf, general manager, GE Security's Homeland Protection business in EMEA. “Charleroi continues a growing trend in Europe, and around the world, to the use of advanced CT-based checked bag screening -- improving the effectiveness and efficiency of bag screening while helping maintain passenger satisfaction.

“A growing number of airports are looking to GE Security to help meet their aviation security needs. From access control, to intrusion, video surveillance and explosive threat detection, airports across Europe and around the world are turning to GE Security for the advanced technology solutions that help them meet their evolving security needs.”
