Prominent 'Ethical Hacker' Joins SMobile as CTO

Daniel V. Hoffman, telecom security expert and author of numerous security books and articles, including "BlackJacking: Security Threats to BlackBerry Devices, PDAs, and Cell Phones in the Enterprise" (Wiley Publishing, 2007) has been tapped by SMobile Systems to join their executive team as chief technology officer.

Mr. Hoffman, a well-known and respected "ethical hacker" whose security expertise has been featured in education curriculum, conferences and media outlets globally, will head the SMobile Threat Center and lead the product development team on future updates, enhancement and versions of the flagship product, SecurityShield.

"Dan's many years of telecom experience will help SMobile usher in a new security paradigm to the mobile communications industry," said Rick Roscitt, CEO of SMobile Systems. "Today's mobile devices are used for everything from making business deals to checking a bank statement -- few people realize how vulnerable this activity leaves their personal information. With Dan on board SMobile will drive awareness of the nefarious threats to mobile devices and networks and continue to work to protect users from them."

The SMobile Threat Center was established in 2006 with the mission of discovering and educating the world on the existence of nefarious applications that target mobile devices and networks. To date, the Threat Center has identified more than 400 viruses and threats as well as malicious hackers and data thieves. As head of the Threat Center, Mr. Hoffman will be responsible for monitoring known malfeasances and identifying new threats to mobile users around the globe.

Mr. Hoffman has a background of more than a decade in the telecom and security industries. He began his career in the U.S. Coast Guard as a decorated telecommunications engineer. After his discharge he joined the private sector, leading technology teams and bringing his unique security expertise to such companies as UUNET/Worldcom and Fiberlink, a provider of software and services for mobile enterprises. At Fiberlink, Mr. Hoffman was best known for his live hacking demonstrations and security videos, which have been featured in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's open source infrastructure report.
