IP wireless solution proves to be a winning formula

The Gedling Borough, U.K., Council recently installed wireless IP technology to protect citizens from petty and serious crime as part of a much wider crime and disorder partnership initiative.

Four town centers—Arnold, Mapperley, Carlton and Netherfield—will be making maximum use of some of the latest camera, encoder, recording and video management hardware and software from Bosch’s CCTV product range, said Chris Lazzari, director of Central Security Systems.

"We chose Bosch because of the notably high-resolution images from its cameras, even over IP, and the quality of its streaming,"Lazzari said. "Being wireless means no hard wiring was required—making installation much easier—but without sacrificing quality. Single sourcing also made sense."

Protecting the Borough

Gedling Borough installed 14 dome products, as well as a selection of fixed Dinion IPs. Images are transmitted over wireless IP to a central monitoring station with 8 TB of storage, making maximum use of Bosch’s VIP-X IP encoders and VIDOS IP video management software.

"We wanted a town center CCTV system that was reliable, relatively low cost but very high quality, that could be linked in with other parts of the borough,"said Kevin Nealong of the Gedling Borough council. "This equipment gives us the ability to do this. Our vision is that the system will ultimately become the hub for a whole range of other agencies, including the Neighborhood Wardens, police, Police Community Support Officers, and the fire and rescue service."

The AutoDome uses advanced 15-bit imaging technology, which produces sharp and detailed images and handles difficult lighting conditions. The camera uses an auto-black feature that counteracts the effects of fog or glare. A feature that compensates for fading light and a backlight ensures clear images when viewing entrances. The cameras also employs a motion-tracking capability.

Borough officials also wanted to ensure the IP feature would have an integrated IP network connection, which combines all the benefits and reliability of the Dinion range with a network video server that transmits video and control data over an IP network.

Full Control

The dome cameras and the fixed Dinion IP cameras are integrated into a video management system that affords monitoring station operators total control of all the cameras installed across the two town centers of Arnold and Netherfield. Town centers in Mapperley and Carlton will follow with installations that also will include LCD monitors and recorders in the monitoring hub.

"Installation is straightforward, and they are easy to configure via the IP network,"Lazzari said. "With an Ethernet connection and analog BNC output, Dinion IP cameras offer a hybrid solution as they can be connected to existing analog CCTV equipment while offering the additional flexibility and scalability of IP-based CCTV systems."
