Axis Cameras Chosen To Improve Security For Buses In Czech Republic

Axis Communications recently announced that over the next six years several hundred AXIS 209FD-R network cameras will be installed in new public transport buses in Prague. The IP cameras will be part of a system for monitoring each vehicle's interior, improving passenger security and providing evidence to help solve incidents of vandalism and other crimes.

Over the next six years, the SOR Libchavy bus manufacturer will supply the Prague Transport Authority (DPHMP) with a total of 620 buses for municipal transport. The new buses will have a modern design and meet strict environmental criteria. Each bus will also be equipped with an IP surveillance camera system for monitoring its interior featuring the AXIS 209FD-R network camera.

The AXIS 209FD-R network camera is a palm-sized, discrete, rugged network camera(5) designed specifically for the tough environments found in mass transit vehicles. Its durable transparent cover provides excellent protection against dust, humidity and vibrations. The small built-in heater eliminates condensation on the lens or cover. The cameras are designed for easy installation and can withstand the tough and changing conditions in buses.

The Axis camera's progressive scan technology provides full resolution images of moving objects with no distortion, thus ensuring good quality evidence to help solve incidents of vandalism and other crimes. All recorded video has a resolution of up to 640x480 pixels, which is more than the 2CIF typically offered by analog systems.

The AXIS 209FD-R network cameras also feature specific intelligent capabilities such as the active tampering alarm, which sends a warning sound when it detects that a vandal is attempting to move, block or cover it in spray-paint.

"The AXIS 209FD-R is designed for deployment in buses so it has been specifically designed to prevent or reduce crime, graffiti and vandalism, which are the key requirements in this environment. In case of an accident or crime, it also provides useful high-quality video evidence to support and accelerate the investigation process," says Edwin Roobol, regional manager NL, DACH and CEE.

One hundred AXIS 209FD-R cameras have been installed in the Prague buses since November 2009. The whole project will be finished in 2014 and will incorporate several hundred Axis IP cameras.
