Illinois Town Deploys Wireless Video Surveillance Solution

The Motorola Solutions business of Motorola Inc. announced that Current Technologies, a full-service IT consulting firm and member of Motorola's PartnerEmpower channel program, has deployed its wireless video security solution in the Village of Maywood, Ill. to help local law enforcement better protect the safety of businesses and residents.

Combining wireless broadband connectivity with state-of-the-art video surveillance technology, Motorola's cost-effective and flexible solution offers real-time access to footage from more than 80 locations across the village to increase situational awareness, improve incident response times and provide deterrence against criminal activity.

"Ensuring the safety and security of local businesses and residents is one of our top priorities, and the addition of real-time video surveillance capabilities has greatly strengthened these efforts," said Chief Tim Curry, Village of Maywood Police Department. "By opting for wireless broadband to backhaul video footage from video cameras across the village, we were able to greatly reduce the upfront equipment and installation costs while putting in place an infrastructure that has given us the flexibility to quickly shift or add video surveillance capability when and where it is needed."

The wireless video security solution implemented by the Village of Maywood depends on a combination of two Motorola wireless broadband technologies to reliably and securely backhaul footage from wireless video surveillance cameras installed throughout the village's most troubled areas.

Motorola 4300 Series Intelligent Access Points (IAP) create high-performance, mesh wide area networks (MWAN) to offer broadband access in locations where several cameras are installed. The mesh IAPs leverage the field-proven MeshConnex routing engine and One Point Wireless Manager element management system, creating a self-forming, self-healing wireless broadband network. By connecting multiple cameras to a single IAP, the deployment costs are greatly reduced with no need to trench cabling or incur monthly leased line charges for every location.

"We are seeing great interest from municipalities to deploy the latest technologies and help local law enforcement better protect the public, but budgetary constraints can often hamper these efforts," said Steve Daugherty, president, Current Technologies. "Wireless networking technologies developed by Motorola help elevate these concerns by offering high-performance, reliable and secure connectivity at the fraction of the cost required by traditional wired or fiber approaches."

The IAPs work in synch with Motorola PMP 400 network access solutions, which provide backhaul, ensure reliable and secure transport of data traffic between the village's neighborhoods and the core of the network, and deliver cost-effective access to areas where only stand-alone cameras are needed. Offering flexibility and scalability unmatched by traditional wired approaches, Motorola's point-to-multipoint wireless broadband solutions continue to lead the industry in delivering affordable and reliable wireless broadband connectivity in the licensed and unlicensed spectrum. With the three millionth PMP network access module recently shipped for deployment, these dependable solutions continue to be preferred by tens of thousands of network operators, enterprises and government agencies around the world.

"Cities are quickly recognizing the benefits that Municipal Services Networks offer, from unmatched flexibility to lower deployment costs and improved productivity," said Scott French, MSSI vice president, Wireless Mobility Sales, Motorola Solutions. "The deployment in Maywood is a great example of how Motorola and its partners are helping municipalities take advantage of the latest wireless broadband technologies to better protect the public's safety."
