Serbian City Installs More Than 1,000 IP Video Cameras To Reduce Crime, Improve Traffic Logistics

Aimetis Corp., provider of intelligent IP video management software recently announced that the Serbian City of Novi Sad has implemented Aimetis Symphony video management and video analytics software as well as Axis HDTV network cameras to successfully decrease criminal activity and enhance traffic logistics.

Aimetis Symphony combines robust features for network video management with high performance video analytics algorithms -- all in one unified software platform. It analyzes video data in real-time and provides organizations with intelligent information.

The Aimetis Symphony software was deployed along with 1,000 HDTV network cameras from Axis Communications, which have been placed throughout public places in the city for use 24 hours per day. A newly constructed data and video monitoring center is used to store video data, as well as provide centralized event management and faster onsite response. Monitoring is also available from police headquarters.

Aimetis provides the city with real-time information alerts based on multiple applications such as motion tracking, object classification, people/vehicle counting, virtual fencing, left/removed objects, dwell time and auto-PTZ tracking.

As a result of this implementation, Serbia’s second largest city reports that its citizens have realized increased security as levels of theft and vandalism have decreased. In addition, city officials say that Novi Sad has experienced vast improvements in traffic logistics.

“Symphony’s ability to meet our video management and analytics needs in one software platform with a cost-effective IP surveillance infrastructure made it a clear choice for the project,” said Vladimir Knežević, chief technical officer, JKP Informatika Novi Sad. “Combined with the value of the Axis network cameras, this successful city surveillance project that has reduced crime by 20 percent is an exemplary model for other city governments that are striving toward better city development and growth in the future.”

The primary objectives of the Novi Sad surveillance system were to increase the common citizen’s security, by monitoring educational institutions (pre-school, school and university campus), as well as surveillance of the most important city infrastructures. Beyond the requirement of a centralized event management software solution with real-time information alerts and on-demand reports, the city also needed the provision of HDT- quality network cameras that would work in day/night environments.

Based on its platform of video management and analytics, licensing model and interface, Aimetis Symphony was chosen as the only IP software manufacturer that covered all the requirements and specifications of this city surveillance project.

The surveillance system was designed from the very beginning to be extremely flexible and scalable. This was ideal for Novi Sad because various city surveillance locations have specific requirements. Some areas needed only recording and viewing capabilities while others required analytics. Thus, a software environment was required that could handle server redundancy and the ability to mix and match video management and analytics licenses on the same server.

In addition, video surveillance of large, open places such as major traffic intersections, university campuses and city squares, require a superior camera. Axis network cameras provide HDTV megapixel resolutions, 16:9 aspect ratio and day/night functionality.

With the help of JKP Informatika, a Serbian system integration company and Aimetis Certified Partner, the installation of Aimetis Symphony Enterprise license enabled the city to choose the different analytics that suited the requirements of each location. By mixing and matching licenses and the software’s scalability to add one license at a time, the city achieved a well-optimized video surveillance system, with the opportunity to scale upwards in the coming years.

“We are excited that Novi Sad was able to achieve its objectives today and retain its ability to easily upgrade and expand in the future," said Marc Holtenhoff, CEO, Aimetis Corp. “We look forward to working with Novi Sad, Axis and JKP Informatika as the city’s needs evolve.”
