Travel Abroad Safety Tips - While You're There

When traveling abroad, it can be easy to become comfortable and let your guard down. Yet while certainly many abroad locales are extremely safe, it is also important to remember certain safety tips to stay safe while in a foreign country. These tips from the U.S. State Department are helpful to keep in mind while you are traveling abroad.

While abroad, it is important to take many of the same precautions that you would at home. Cater your caution to the area you are in, as you should exercise carefulness in crowded subways, train stations, elevators, popular tourist sites, and other areas. It is best not to travel alone or in dark, unlit areas. Be wary of strangers who approach you, and never share personal travel details with someone you don’t know. Keep your belongings secure and close to you at all times, and learn a few phrases in the local language in case you are in need of police or medical help.

While in your hotel, keep your hotel door locked at all times. Do not answer the door for anyone you do not know, and do not leave money or any other valuables out while you are gone.

Safety is of chief concern wherever you are, but especially while traveling abroad. No matter where you are, whether it is the busy city street or a crowded train to the country, being alert and aware of your surroundings will keep you safe no matter where you are.
