Winter Driving Safety Tips

With snow already accumulating in parts of the Northeast, drivers everywhere are waking up to harsh wintry weather. This unpredictable weather can make for difficult driving, which is why it is essential to keep a few things in mind when hitting the road this time of year. Here are some critical safety tips to remember this season.

If you live in an area particularly prone to harsh winters, winter tires may be an option to explore. Winter tires use unique tread patterns to better grip the road in slippery or icy winter weather conditions, allowing you better peace of mind as you head into the elements. When the roads are icy or snowy, it is advisable not to use cruise control, as you should always be in full control of your acceleration and deceleration. Give yourself plenty of room to stop, especially in icy road conditions. Don’t slam on the brakes – braking gently will allow your wheels to have time to react. Low gears can help your vehicle maintain traction, especially when you are on hills. Lastly, if the conditions seem too harsh to go out in, don’t go out in them. Even 4-wheel drive vehicles aren’t meant for all conditions, and the safety of you and your family is the highest priority.

Winter weather can bring with it driving challenges. Keeping these safety tips in mind, the road ahead can be a safe one to travel.
