A Detailed Recap of ISC West 2013

Each day began early, with an iced vanilla latte to get me energized and ready to experience ISC West 2013 at its fullest. Below is a recap of all the companies that I met with, interesting facts that I learned as well as descriptions of new security products.

Altronix – Met with Kirby Han, Art Director, who explained that their eBridgePlus Ethernet over Coax was able to accommodate 1500 feet of Coax, so no CAT 5 is needed.
SightLogix – John Romanowich, president and CEO, demonstrated SightLogix’ cost-effective, long-range thermal detection cameras. These cameras have an imager, lens optics, electronic stabilization, video analytics software, camera control and GPS target tracking, all of which work together to produce better accuracy. There are also on-board digital signal processors that communicate directly with the image sensor to analyze scene details of each frame.
Morse Watchmans – George Lawson, Account Executive, demonstrated the KeyWatcher Illuminated system. What I found most fascinating is that the LED lights that illuminated the system could be color-customized. At ISC West, the lights glowed green! Only pre-authorized users can access the cabinet that records all transactions providing an audit trail of who accessed and when.
OnSSI – Janet Maurer discussed the LiVest, a covert wearable surveillance system with 2 tiny cameras in the front and 1 in the back that produces live, streamed video. The vest was conceived, designed and developed by Mosha Levi, a produce manager with OnSSI and ex-Israeli intelligence. Janet let me in on a little secret: The vest that was on display was actually hand-sewn by Mosha! He did an awesome job!
Dortronics – Bryan Sanderford, National Sales Manager, explained three new products. The 3412 Series Drop-Bolt lock, a heavy-duty lock with an automatic alignment sensor, the ML-1100 Series Electromagnetic Mortis Lock & Pull that produces a holding force of 1000 pounds but produces instant release upon command or loss of power, and the 6450 Series Keyed Lever-Type Handles paired with 6495 Series Egress Bars, enabling access from the exterior side of the door. Bryan commented that a lot of their designs come from individual clients who request special locks for certain situations. In my opinion, Dortronics provides itself in providing customizable solutions.
Marshall Electronics – Daniel Walsh, industrial video and security sales, demonstrated the new 17-inch HDSDI Display Monitor that has broad-cast quality features and displays HD video from HDSDI 1080p cameras. Daniel also mentioned that OSF Healthcare in Peoria, IL is utilizing Marshall, so I will be following up with him for more details at a later date.
ASSA ABLOY – I focused on school security with Sargent, an ASSA ABLOY Group, who showcased the Profile Series G1.5 Lock with key fob that empowers and enables teachers to remotely security classroom locks during an emergency, from up to 75 feet away! However, to use the key fob, the user must have a master credential.
New Product Showcase (NPS) Award Ceremony – Innovative Security Design won Best New Product for their Lynx system, and 3M Cogent won the Judge’s Choice Award for their MiY Touch Reader.
LenovoEMC – Met with Bill Hansen, global produce manager. The overall theme for this company is ease of use and their new NVRs live up to this name. Utilizing Milestone Arcus, zero configuration is needed, simply plug in, turn on and it’s ready to use.
MOBOTIX – Steve Gorski, general manager, discussed that MOBOTIX doesn’t offer just a camera but a total solution with free VMS, analytics and on-board storage. The cameras are megapixel and come weather-proof out of the box. All MOBOTIX cameras have two lenses = 1 camera 2 lenses. The MOBOTIX App was introduced enabling users to manage and control operations from the IP door station, providing notifications when someone rings the doorbell, can remotely unlock the door, and can send live images and recordings from door stations and cameras.
Tour of Panorama Towers – Rhianna with CompassPR invited me on an exclusive tour to view the MOBOTIX security solutions in action. I received a behind-the-scenes look at the security cameras in action as well as a tour of the workout room, pool area, and back gate. The back gate has car recognition capabilities as well as a video phone that calls a dispatcher who can then see the driver and decide whether to give access or not.

Honeywell Press Conference
- System Sensor – Doug Hoeferle, Sr. product marketing manager, demonstrated the i4 Combo Co/Smoke Detector, stating it is the first combo detector on the market. Doug also said that there are over 600,000 unintentional Co poisonings per year and 300 deaths per year related to Co.
- Silent Knight – Susan Adam, marketing director, presented the Addressable Fire Alarm Panel w/Powerful Voice. This new solution, the 5820XL-EVS combines fire control, voice and microphone into one system making it an integrated choice.
- Fire Lite – Stacy Deveraux, director of marketing, introduced Take Command, a mass notification system, with a free app. With school security, if a classroom is in lockdown, any cell phone or land line phone can be used to login and deliver an emergency voice message.
Middle Atlantic Products – Michael Cukrow, technical marketing manager, demonstrated their new ergonomically-friendly monitoring desk that can be raised and lowered at the touch of a button. From a sitting position to standing, this desk offers extreme comfort. And, it’s able to life over 300lbs! There’s even a video of me riding on it! Kwikset – Amazing lock coming out! The regular-looking lock connects to Bluetooth, so all you have to do is have your iPhone in your pocket, purse or bag and simply touch the lock once to unlock it our 3 times to lock it. Also has the ability to send electronic keys to other people for one-time access.
Lutron Electronics – Melissa Andresko, communications director, demonstrated their affordable, remote controlled window shades that work in conjunction with a security system. If a window is breached, the shades automatically go up, lights flash and the alarm sounds. Shades come in a variety of colors and different light filter options.
Tyco Integrated Security – Prides itself on identifying the customer’s needs and then designing a customized security solution for the commercial sector. They provide total solutions with the same applications and level of service in multiple locations. Their Total Connect 2.0 is a simple, non-intimidating, easy-to-use security solution with the unique feature of being able to move the position of the security cameras from a mobile device.
Security Executive Council – SEC announced that they have joined with Elsevier, a publishing company of science & technology books, to create and provide educational books that are centered on hands-on situations and the actual skills need to succeed in the security industry. These books will help colleges and universities teach about the security industry.
Milestone – Introduced their Arcus video surveillance platform that can be embedded into hardware devices, allowing their technology partners to utilize this technology. Milestone’s VMS XProtect line was also on display for demonstrations. Milestone is very partner-focused and offers training programs to certify all partners.
3VR – Dale Small, senior product manager, and I discussed loss prevention being the hardest issue to solve by security investigators because they must search through hours of video. In response, 3VR announced their VisionPoint VMS that has a forensic search feature that uses meta data depending on analytics or integration as well as a face find feature that enables investigators to see if someone has previously been in a certain building.
PSIA – Was started in 2007 because the security industry had no established standards, so PSIA developed the comprehensive approach that all devices needed to interact and share data so that a number of ways to integrate are possible. To do this PSIA created a common language for devices to communicate.
Valen’s Semiconductor – This company made their debut at ISC West 2013. I spoke with Eli Ofek, VP of products, who discussed the VS020 Chipset with CCTV over CAT technology that allows full, uncompressed video to be transmitted up to 150 meters in a single transmission via a single cable.
Proxim – Mike Foster, senior vice president, worldwide sales, explained how they provide wireless broadband network connections by utilizing their own air area. Because their Internet access is so secure, verticals, such as the military, use them to help power their drones.
March Networks – Received an overview of this company by Net Payne, chief marketing officer and Dan Cremins, director product management. This company introduced their 8000 Series, a hybrid NVR that allows users to transition to IP video without sacrificing their existing analog products. The 8000 Series NVRs can support up to 32 IP cameras or any hybrid camera combo with as many as 16 analog cameras. Each platform comes with a QR code on the front panel and when used with the free GURU smartphone app, instant access to product information, warranty status, express repair processing and trouble shooting is provided.
SightLogix Dinner at Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion – A special thank you to SightLogix for introducing me to “butterfish,” this impeccable white fish, seared on the outside with a balsamic glaze. Thank goodness we have Roy’s in Dallas, now that I’m addicted! LOL!

Schneider Electric/Pelco – Lonnie Laue, security center of excellence buildings business, and Steven Turney, security program manager buildings business, both of Schneider Electric demonstrated and discussed their Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS) solution. This cloud-based solution offers 24/7 recorded video with instant and historic access to video, real-time alerts of security breaches, and the ability to access video anywhere from a standard Internet Browser.
Scott Paul, senior product marketing manager, with PELCO introduced the new Sarix IL 10 Series mini box and micro dome cameras, an affordable line of IP cameras to meet customers’ needs. I especially liked the box camera that was in a triangular shape.
Thrive Intelligence – Matt Antkowiak, chief intelligence officer, and ex-police officer, spoke of “video surveillance as a service.” With a central command center supervised by police officers, monitor operators are trained on how to interact with the police so that they communicate quicker and effectively, thus, enabling response time to be quicker.
Guardian8– Paul Huges, chief of operations, described their layered defense system for security guards. The G8 Pro V1, an enhanced non-lethal (ENL), is a gun shaped device that offers the options of an alerting siren, laser spotter, camera, incident auto-record, strobe light, O.C. pepper spray and Bluetooth command center communication link. Very light and easy to use, I got to fire off some practice rounds!
JVC – Demonstrated their colored, megapixel camera that automatically switches to black and white when the time is right so that accurate video footage is recorded.
Zebra Technologies – David Murphy, business development manager, introduced me to their line of printers, used to print identification cards, such as driver’s licenses. An interesting usage of these printers: a ski resort uses the cards to identify skiers, linking the skier to a video of him or her skiing down a slope.
AFI – Highlighted their 6 port switch, which compliments their current product line. The switch has 4 PoE ports with WatchDog, a circuit “pinging” device. The idea for this switch came from a government project.
