TSA Confiscates Mortar Round at Dulles International Airport

Well, well, well…what do we have here? Obviously something that does not belong on an aircraft.
Looks like TSA confiscated a 60mm inert mortar round from a passenger’s luggage at Washington-Dulles International Airport after TSA agents saw the mortar inside his checked bag.
Apparently, the man had just flown into the United States and was passing through Dulles on his way to Denver. The man willingly surrendered the mortar, and the case was turned over to the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Police Department to determine the next steps.
“It is highly unusual for something of this nature to be found in checked or unchecked baggage,” stated Lisa Farbstein, spokesperson for TSA. “When you’re talking about military grade weapons, it’s just not the safest to try and bring them on aircraft.”
Since the man was flying in from overseas, makes me wonder if he found it and wanted to keep it as a souvenir, especially since the mortar was inactive.
However, its instances such as this that should serve as a reminder to us all that no weapons are allowed on planes - even non-functioning ones.
