ONVIF Debuts Profile C for Access Control and Demonstrates Profile S at First-Ever ISC West Booth

ONVIF, a standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, announced plans for its first-ever exhibit at ISC West, scheduled for April 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

At Booth #23135 in the New Exhibitor Pavilion, ONVIF will display the recently released Profile C, which extends the functionality of the ONVIF global interface specification into the physical access control arena, and enables interoperability between clients and devices of physical access control systems (PACS) and network-based video systems.

“As the industry has evolved over the last five years, ONVIF acceptance has grown, signaling the industry’s need for a common interface for effective interoperability within different components of a security system,” said Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee, Per Björkdahl. “With the support of our member community we have experienced an impressive growth in profile conformant products and most recently, ONVIF expansion into physical access control. And additional profiles are in development – we are excited for what is to come.”

Among the companies demonstrating Profile C interoperability within their access control products at the ONVIF booth will be Axis Communications, Bosch Security Systems, Honeywell and Siemens. Within an access control system, Profile C provides door and access point information and functionality related to basic door control activities such as locking and unlocking doors, when a door has been accessed and other door monitoring tasks.

ONVIF will also showcase Profile S for video and audio streaming, its first and most widely adopted profile, which will be demonstrated by Avigilon, Axis, Bosch, DRS Technologies, Fike, Hikvision, Honeywell, ISS, Panasonic, Pelco by Schneider Electric, Sony and Videotec. As part of the Profile S awareness campaign, ONVIF has placed floor decals at the booths of the 60 member companies displaying Profile S conformant products at ISC West – and tied this into a promotion for attendees to win an iPad Mini.

Founded in 2008, ONVIF now consists of nearly 500 member companies and more than 2,700 Profile S conformant products. This strong market acceptance has fueled the development of a bold new ONVIF brand identity which will be launched at ISC West.

  • The Evolution of IP Camera Intelligence

As the 30th anniversary of the IP camera approaches in 2026, it is worth reflecting on how far we have come. The first network camera, launched in 1996, delivered one frame every 17 seconds—not impressive by today’s standards, but groundbreaking at the time. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
