Obama’s Plans to Increase Border Security

Obama’s Plans to Increase Border SecurityIn the recent weeks, border security has been all the rage in the media, with reports of abandoned children and how to care for them, and even border agents asking for size large underwear to help clothe those coming into the U.S. illegally. As the government continues to deal with this crisis, President Obama will confront Congress for funding the following:

  1. Aggressive deterrence strategy to remove and return recent border crossers to their place of citizenship.
  2. Border security surge to enhance domestic enforcement by destroying and prosecuting criminal networks.
  3. Increase the number of immigration judges and facilities to expedite processing cases involving those who crossed the border in recent week.
  4. Work with Central American partners to return migrants to their countries, address root causes of migration, and communicate the realities of dangerous journeys.
  5. Detain, process and care for children and adults.

Concluding his efforts, Obama identified a government-wide strategy to address the influx of migrants across U.S. borders by giving the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security addition authorities such as the ability to determine the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and to increase penalties for those who smuggle vulnerable migrants like children or the elderly.

So, what has already been done to remedy this situation?

According to Obama, DHS and the Department of Justice have deployed immigration judges, Immigration and Customs Enforcement attorneys and asylum officers to focus on adult migrants traveling with children and entering the U.S. without authorization. DHS is also attempting to secure additional space so that humanitarian standards can be met when detaining adults with children while law enforcement task forces work with international partners to fight criminal smuggling rings.

So readers, what do you think?

Do you agree with what President Obama is doing to remedy illegal migration into the U.S.?

What do you suggest as a fix?
