A report this week claims that Amazon’s Lab126 is working on smart-home devices and will need to boost their numbers in order to do so. Amazon is planning on expanding the secretive hardware unit by at least 27 percent over the next five years, according to government documents.
This projection means the lab will jump to 3,757 employees by 2019. Lab126 is home to other Amazon products, such as the Kindle and Kindle Fire, as well as the Amazon Fire Phone.
Amazon is supposedly envisioning products for the home that would connect to the internet and provide greater user control. They could include features that allow for one-click buying when supplies run low, such as dish soap or laundry detergent. Amazon is also interested in wearable tech that could compete with the Apple Watch.
