Chinese Ex-Security Chief Gets Life Sentence

Zhou Yongkang was sentenced for accepting bribes, abusing power and revealing state secrets

The former domestic security chief of China was sentenced to life in prison earlier today for accepting bribes, abusing power and revealing state secrets, according to a report.

Zhou Yongkang was once considered to wield more power than anyone except for top leaders due to his control of police and the criminal justice system.  Mr. Zhou was found guilty of accepting $118,000 in bribes as well as leaking secret documents to a Beijing fortuneteller.

“I obey the verdict the court handed to me. I will not appeal,” Mr. Zhou said. “I acknowledge the fact that I have broken the law and committed crimes, and have caused losses to the party’s work. I, once again, plead guilty, and I repent.”
