Another University Hit With Violence

Updated: Another University Hit With Violence

UPDATE:

After two shootings in as many days, Texas Southern has taken measures to tighten security. Police are still searching for a suspect in connection with the shootings, as surveillance video capture footage of a male they suspect to be the shooter.

One person was killed and another was injured Friday morning at an apartment complex near the university.

One of the changes is an 11 p.m. curfew for all student housing. Campus officials also say they have added 24-hour security. Officials will also check rooms at random and have started a sign-in/sign-out policy for those in campus housing.

Texas Southern University, in Houston, was on lockdown Friday as police searched for a suspect after two people were shot at a student housing complex, university officials said.

The shooting was reported at 11:30 a.m. at University Courtyard Apartments, on the edge of campus. University spokesman Kendrick Callis said the suspected shooter was still on the loose as of early afternoon. He said the campus is on lockdown. Classes have been cancelled.

"Campus police sent an alert saying the shooting occurred at the housing complex," Callis said.

Houston and campus police didn't immediately return messages seeking comment. Police and emergency vehicles were at the scene, though no additional details were immediately available.

The university has about 9,700 students.
