UNC Implements Security Measures during Lockdown

In early December sirens sounded to warn students and faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill of a reported armed and dangerous person on or near campus.

Law enforcement officers swarmed to the ROTC building on campus and closed all the surrounding streets. Students and staff were told to stay inside while police investigated the threat.

The Chapel Hill campus is equipped with sirens and a voice notification system activated in the case of a significant emergency or immediate health or safety threat to the campus community. The university also implements email, its website and Twitter to get the word out in emergency situations.

After school officials and law enforcement determined the threat to be over, sirens sounded again with a different tone and voice message, “All clear. Resume normal activities.”
