Opening Day is a Success

Just like Opening Day on the baseball diamond, Day One of ISC West has been a success. Lots of people filling the Sands Convention Center, lots of beer at about 4 p.m. and the promise that today will be equally, if not better, for the home team.

It's good to see that the research and development teams around the globe have been hard at work.

According to Fredrik Nilsson, ISC West is where Axis Communications launches the majority of its new products. And, they have. The company has announced a companion line of technology for the small- and medium-sized business owner/end user. He said, 79 percent of companies in the United States are small businesses.

So, you ask, what is the most interesting thing of Day One? It's time to really consider cybersecurity, and how to secure the network. I believe we will see much more on thit topic in the days following. So, who is securing your security solutions?

Live shooter events have increased at an alarming rate. Two things on my plate yesterday that deal with this trend. Louroe is showing technology that swings into place when audio is picked up that suggests there is a situation. The audio portion of this technology then calls down to parties involved, demanding they leave the scene. Seems like a good way to let an intruder on campus that their type of is not welcome. Stanley is also introducing a responsive lockdown technology: Best Shelter. In a live shooter event, it is critical to be able to quickly create safe spaces within the interior of a building.

Security engineers have gathered knowledge and experience from Columbine and Sandy Hook, engineering what they believe to be an innovative set of features to protect students in the event of a lockdown.

Recently, there have been a number of mergers and acquisitions. I took a moment to visit with Tony Byerly and his staff. Byerly is president of Securitas Electronic Security.

"The Securitas acquisition is based on a growth model with a refreshing approach to business growth synergies," Byerly said. "Our planning and actions will not focus on cost synergies, office closures and headcount reductions – it's about growth, expanding the portfolio of security solutions available to the customer."

I'm sure we'll hear more from Byerly, and many other acquisitions throughout the year. In fact, keep an eye on Samsung, oh, my bad, I mean Hanwha Techwin. They are on a mission to make security worldwide part of their overall game plan.

Here is an interested, yet relatively simple new technology. Camden Door Controls brings to market a flush mount wired and wireless keypad. What I like about this is that it is weather resistant, and the fact that it is designed, engineered and built in North America.

I look for today to be an equally exciting day on the show floor. I hope you are having a great show, or if you are not here, able to track events through our Twitter feeds from our newly created Live From ISC West page.
