Thousands of Officers Expected at Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon 2016 will be the third completed marathon since the bombing that killed 3 and injured an estimated 264 more at the finish line in 2013. Despite the fact that the marathon has not seen any threats since then, officials have created a comprehensive security plan to keep runners, marathon staff and spectators safe.

This year, Boston law officials believe there will be upwards of 5,000 officers to complete surveillance during the marathon. Alongside the Boston Police Department, you will find officers from surrounding areas and even the National Guard will be present.

The biggest security presence will be seen at the finish line, where in 2013 two pressure bombs exploded creating mass panic. Officers will line the fences and there will be bomb sniffing dogs present on the scene.

Authorities will be utilizing a new checkpoint system designed to unclog congested areas when they fill with spectators. The system works to identify the most populated areas and then help move the traffic along, or even close that area, to disburse the onlookers to other areas along the course.

In addition to the checkpoint system, those attending the event are urged to leave larger bags and coolers at home, as to avoid longer security lines.

The Boston Police will be able to communicate to the thousands of officers in the area through the “same channel” making the communication streamlined and easier to pass on important information.

With an estimated 1 million people turning out to see the marathon, the Boston Police Department are confident that their efforts will help to keep them, and the city, safe.
