Two Dead in Elementary School Shooting in San Bernardino

UPDATE: Three Dead in Elementary School Shooting in San Bernardino

[UPDATE: April 11, 2017 8:30 CT]

Police have confirmed that the man who walked into North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, Calif.  and open fired into a classroom attended by special needs students was the estranged husband of the teacher he killed.

Authorities at the press conference on April 10, were able to also confirm that two students were injured in the gunfire. They were standing directly behind Karen Smith, the deceased teacher, at the time of the incident. One of them, a 8-year-old boy identified as Jonathan Martinez, was airlifted to Loma Linda University Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

Police identified the shooter as Cedric Anderson and confirmed that he was able to make his way into the school by telling school officials that he needed to drop something off to his wife. He signed in at the front office, according to San Bernardino Police Capt. Ron Maass, the incident commander. Police believe he was known to the people in the front office. There was no indication he had a gun on him at the time.

When Anderson made it to the room occupied by his wife, he open fired killing Smith and Martinez and injuring another student.

Police believe Anderson reloaded after firing what is believed to have been a .357-caliber revolver, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

There were 15 other students from grades one through four in the classroom at the time of the shooting, including two adults.

Two people were killed in an apparent murder-suicide inside a classroom at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, Calif.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said four people were injured in the shooting, including two adults and two students. The two adults were dead, the two students were transported to local hospitals, one was airlifted to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

Monica Garcia, of the San Bernardino Unified School District, said the shooting appeared to stem from a domestic violence dispute involving the deceased teacher.

Details about the victims, including ages, were not immediately available.

Currently, the students of North Park Elementary are being bussed over to a local high school where they will be accounted for and interviewed if necessary. Parents will then be reunited with their children.
