Security to be Tight at Denver Comic Con

Security to be Tight at Denver Comic Con

Denver will be hosting the conference for the fifth time, but never with so much security.

Beginning this Friday, June 30, the Denver Convention Center will be flooded with Comic Con attendees, a conference famous for its costumed fanatics.

This will be the fifth time that Denver has hosted the conference, but never with so much security.

While event organizers couldn’t outline every detail of the security plan, they did say there would be a significant presence of Denver police officers and private security guards. A significant change in the security plan involves keeping an eye out for prop firearms.

The plan was altered to include the lookout for fake guns after a man entered Comic Con in Phoenix last month armed with three handguns and a shotgun, saying he was going to kill bad police officers. The man was arrested and no one was injured, but it forced Denver Comic Con to reevaluate its policies.

Security will be checking bags and the event organizers have created only two points of entry – one for attendees with bags and one without. No attendee will be allowed to bring in a prop weapon.

“The change in policy isn’t because we think our cosplayers are prone to violence; it’s because a hall full of prop firearms makes it difficult to discern threats from targets in the event of an actual shooting,” organizers wrote in an unsigned statement.
