Bank of America Boosts Online Security with Biometrics

Bank of America will start using an additional layer of authentication for online banking.

Bank of America will expand its use of biometrics with Intel hardware-based security technologies following a slew of high-profile data breaches at several big U.S. companies.

The bank says it will plan to implement Intel Online Connect technology into its online banking platform, giving customers added security when they bank online. The security feature is expected to roll out in 2018 and Bank of America will be the first financial services company to offer the technology to its customers.

“As online and mobile banking usage continues to grow, we’re focused on implementing the latest technologies that will give our customers the best possible user experience,” said Michelle Moore, head of Digital Banking at Bank of America. “Biometrics can help us achieve that goal, and we’re excited to work with Intel to bring added convenience to our more than 34 million digital banking customers.”

The financial services industry is among the most vulnerable to cyber crime because of the massive amounts of money and valuable data that banks, brokerages and investment firms process each day. Just last month, credit monitoring service Equifax Inc disclosed that cyber criminals had breached its systems between mid-May and mid-July and stolen the sensitive information of millions of Americans.

Bank of America is ensuring its customers, with the rollout of new security technologies, that they are not next. In addition to the partnership with Intel, the company will be giving customers the ability to use Face ID with the rollout of the iPhone X.
