Facebook Hires First Head of Cybersecurity Policy

Facebook has hired a former White House official as its first head of cybersecurity policy. The social media platform confirmed that Nathaniel Gleicher joined the team this month.

This hire comes as Facebook continues to struggle to keep a number of users from posting hate speech and spreading fake news on the site. This week the company bought a start-up called Confirm, which authenticates user identities. Last week, Facebook announced it would be overhauling its News Feed in an effort to promote "trusted" news sources.

In his new position, Gleicher will be part of the broader product policy team that helps Facebook craft rules for how they keep the platform secure for users. Although the position is new, Facebook has in the past employed various other policy experts focused on cybersecurity.

Gliecher will be leading a team that will help guide Facebook internal strategy as well as adapt to external policy decisions that come from Washington, D.C.

Gleicher previously served as the director of cybersecurity policy at the National Security Council as senior counsel to the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section at the Department of Justice.
