Security at Houses of Worship Increased Following New Zealand Mosque Attacks

Security in New York has been stepped up at at Muslim community centers and mosques following the New Zealand attacks that killed 49 people.

New York has increased security at mosques and other houses of worship as a precaution following the deadly mosque attacks in New Zealand that killed 49 people and wounded even more.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Friday that state police have stepped up their patrols statewide and Mayor Bill de Blasio says New York City also is providing extra security for Muslim community centers and mosques.

De Blasio says he wants the city's Muslims to know that New Yorkers "truly embrace" them and "have their backs."

The New York Police Department says it's committed to the safety of all houses of worship and the freedom to practice religion "without any fear."

Last Friday, two different mosques were targeted in a planned terrorist act. Forty-one people were killed at the Al Noor mosque and eight more were killed at the Linqood mosque just three miles away. One suspect is in custody and has been charged for murder as of Friday.
