Sailor Injured, Shooter Killed in Virginia Beach Naval Station Incident

A sailor at the Virginia Beach Naval Air Station Oceana was injured in a shooting last Friday.

Authorities say a shooter is dead and a female sailor was injured in a shooting on Friday morning at Naval Air Station Oceana. 

Capt. Chad Vincelette, the base's commanding officer, said in a news conference that a male sailor shot a female sailor several times in the parking lot of Strike Fighter Squadron 37 (VFA-37), outside Hanger 145, around 6:45 a.m. Both sailors are assigned to the squadron.

The shooter, who was armed with a single handgun, was quickly identified and was shot and killed by base security, Vincelette said. The incident was over in about five minutes.

The injured sailor was taken to a local hospital and her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The base was placed on lockdown following the incident, but was lifted shortly after 7:40 a.m. Virginia Beach police, firefighters and emergency medical services responded to the base on Friday morning. 

Vincelette said Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is investigating the shooting.
