Physician-Staffing Company Data Breach Exposes Personal Info of About 31,000 Patients

EmCare Inc., a physician-staffing company, says a data breach has exposed personal information for about 31,000 patients

EmCare Inc, a physician-staffing company, said a data breach exposed personal information of about 31,000 patients.

EmCare Inc. said Saturday that the information was accessed by an unauthorized third party, who gained access via employee email accounts.

According to company representative Aliese Polk, the breached employee email accounts contained personal data about fewer than 60,000 people, of which about 31,000 were patients.

The company said it learned Feb. 19 that exposed information included names, dates of birth, and Social Security and driver’s license numbers for some patients, employees and contractors. EmCare said it doesn’t know if the personal information was taken, but there’s no indication that it was used for identity theft or fraud.

EmCare began notifying those affected on Friday. It said it is taking steps to prevent another security breach, including more training for employees about email security.

EmCare said it has arranged for identity protection and credit-monitoring services for those whose Social Security or license numbers were part of the data breach.
