SIA Women in Security Forum Launches Sixth Annual CAN DO Challenge to Combat Food Insecurity

The Security Industry Association (SIA) Women in Security Forum (WISF) has officially launched the sixth annual CAN DO Challenge, a charitable initiative running Oct. 13 through Dec. 3, 2025, designed to unite the security industry in the fight against food insecurity during the holiday season.

Spearheaded by the SIA WISF community’s UpliftHER Subcommittee, the CAN DO Challenge invites security professionals and organizations to help alleviate hunger through both donations and acts of service. The effort reflects the industry’s broader commitment to safety, well-being and social responsibility.

“Once again, we’re making it easy for individuals to participate and contribute,” explained Katie Krug, UpliftHER co-chair and senior account executive at SAGE Integration. “People can shop virtually for grocery items on the Philabundance.org site. In addition, we are encouraging exhibitors at ISC East to pack extra snack items to donate to RMM’s Snack Pack program at the end of the show.”

“Nearly 20% of children across the country are experiencing food insecurity. As a mother, helping to close that gap and feed those in need is important to me,” said Colleen Bourbonais, SIA WISF UpliftHER Subcommittee co-chair and human resource manager at industrialEnet. “The CAN DO challenge is an incredible way to make a meaningful, hands-on impact for families who need support within your own local community.”

Ways to Participate in the CAN DO Challenge

Individuals and companies across the security industry are encouraged to:

  • Support a local organization: Volunteer individually or as a team with community food programs, especially during the busy holiday months.
  • Host a food drive: Collect nonperishable items or coordinate a local meal service.
  • Spread the word online: Share photos and updates on social media using the hashtags #WISF, #CANDOChallenge, #SIACares and #FoodInsecurity.
  • Donate funds: Financial contributions to local or national food banks are equally valuable; every effort counts toward making a difference.
  • Send food with ISC East booth: If your company is attending ISC East this year, send nonperishable food items directly to the Javits Center with your booth setup or pack snacks to donate at the SIA booth on the show floor.

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
