Prevailing international aviation rules mandate 100 percent screening for outbound carry-on baggage. Modern screening techniques involve X-ray or other imaging systems combined with chemical sniffers for scent or trace detection, physical search and permissible item restrictions. LifeMed Card Inc. recently announced that it has successfully installed its new smart card-based patient access system, LifeMed at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H.
While federal security requirements like the Transportation Workers Identification Credential program are designed with the safety of the nation in mind, adhering to them can be a costly and time-consuming task. The goal of the TWIC program is to ensure that anyone who has unescorted access to secure areas of U.S. port facilities and vessels has received a thorough background check and is not a known security threat.

L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. recently announced that many jails, prisons and correctional and detention centers are successfully using iris recognition solutions to effectively manage detainee and inmate populations, reduce processing time, increase cost efficiencies and improve safety of officers, prisoners and the public.
Gemalto recently announced it is rolling out its eID solution as part of the Belgian government program to expand its national eID initiative.
A new report from Nucleus Research finds that using biometrics, especially hand geometry, to automate collection of time and attendance data can reduce payroll error, manual data review and correction time, and buddy punching -- the practice of one employee signing in or out for another. Three out of four companies experience loss from buddy punching.
Hand geometry biometric readers are now controlling access to the construction site of the new plutonium storage facility at British Nuclear Group’s Sellafield site in the United Kingdom. The readers were supplied by Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies and installed by Human Recognition Systems.
In 2008 biometric vendors witnessed massive growth. However the same downturn that affected banking, construction industry and retail stores since the end of 2008 also affected some biometric vendors. This said, with the ongoing demand for more integrated security solutions from vertical sectors such as education, law enforcement, government, healthcare and manufacturing facilities, 2009 is anticipated to be a steady uphill year for the market.
Since Sept. 11, 2001, the American sports industry has increased security at major sporting venues and at high-profile events such as the Super Bowl, World Series and Olympics. Stadiums provide a perfect target for mass casualties and catastrophic economic impact, and even university sports programs are taking the necessary steps to secure their stadiums and campuses against potential threats.
