Orsus has been awarded a contract for its Situator product suite with the Port of Houston Authority (PHA). The project will integrate hundreds of cameras and access points, plus other devices for the port authority's public terminals and enhance the PHA's capabilities with a more sophisticated and technologically advanced system.
As the largest air transport group in Spain, Iberia Airlines was interested in improving safety in aircraft-only areas, heightening security in the wake of a 2006 car bombing, and preventing theft in its 200,000 square meter facilities. Unhappy with its existing CCTV security system, the organization turned to video analytics software developer Agent Vi when upgrading its security system.
To accommodate a major expansion of the video surveillance system now protecting port operations, officials with the Port of Corpus Christi (Texas) have selected Siemens Building Technologies Inc. to upgrade the capabilities of the entire system.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Port of Los Angeles worked together to open an additional enrollment site recently on Terminal Island in an effort to facilitate enrollment for the Los Angeles/Long Beach port worker, mariner and trucker communities into the federal Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program.
The transportation industry relies on an inherently open architecture and is a complex critical infrastructure where free movement is necessary as people move within and between modes of transportation. This freedom of movement must be maintained for transit to perform its basic functions. Due to the volume of people in public places using various means of transportation, ensuring safety and monitoring all of the movement can be difficult and challenging.

The Department of Homeland Security announced recently more than $844 million in grant awards as part of its Infrastructure Protection Activities (IPA) grant program. Grant awards will strengthen security at ports and enhance transit, trucking and intercity bus systems.
The maritime industry is clearly one of the most powerful drivers of international commerce and economic vitality in the world. The statistics are astounding, including a worldwide fleet of nearly 11 million marine containers, a transportation cargo unit that can hold up to 500 computer monitors.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, our nation has been obsessed with air-travel security. Terrorist attacks from the air have been the threat that looms largest in Americans’ minds. As a result, we’ve wasted millions on misguided programs to separate the regular travelers from the suspected terrorists—money that could have been spent to actually make us safer.
