Winner Takes All

The ribbons have been cut and ISC West and the Public Security & Safety Expo are underway. The highlight of the day for many exhibitors is the SIA New Product Showcase, an annual awards program to recognize new and innovative security products and services. This year, the program celebrates its 30th anniversary. The awards showcase was created to recognize outstanding innovations in the design of electronic security products, systems and services.

Last year’s Best in Show winner was NoblePeak Vision’s TriWave Camera.

Who will win this year? Stay tuned!

Security Products kicks off our very own 2009 New Product of the Year Awards at ISC West this year. Sales and editorial staff have been busy scoping out new products and handing out entry forms to manufacturers with products, technologies and services that truly impressed us.

Award categories include access control, accessories, alarm, fire and gas equipment, network-centric security, perimeter security, video surveillance and business-continuity products.

Winners in each category will receive media attention from Security Products and will be able to use the magazine’s 2009 New Product of the Year logo for one year on all advertisements and marketing materials, plus recognition in Security Products marketing and promotions. Best of all, winners will receive editorial coverage in the November issue.

So, if you happen to see one of us walking around the show floor, make sure to flag us down for an entry form. With more than 1,000 exhibitors, we won’t be able to visit with everyone so, if you think you’ve got a winner, get our attention or stop by our booth number 2055 to pick up a form. If you’re not at ISC West this year, you can still enter by downloading an entry form from our Web site (http://www.secprodonline.com). The entry deadline is June 15.

We will announce the winners at this year’s ASIS in Anaheim Calif.

The first network camera, launched in 1996, delivered one frame every 17 seconds—not impressive by today’s standards, but groundbreaking at the time. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
