South African Transportation Projects To Use March Networks IP Video Technology

March Networks, a provider of intelligent IP video and business analysis applications, announced recently that it will provide its VideoSphere Intelligent Video Management solution for two significant transportation projects in South Africa, working in conjunction with experienced security systems integrator Basix Technologies (Pty) Ltd.

Both projects are slated for completion in advance of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, during which South Africa will play host to thousands of spectators from around the world.

The IP video solution will be deployed to enhance security at 14 rail stations along the 80-kilometre Gautrain mass rapid transit system currently under construction in the country's Gauteng Province. Security staff will use VideoSphere Video Management System (VMS) and SiteManager software, integrated with March Networks Edge Blade Encoders and industry-standard IT servers, to monitor station activity in real-time and review video evidence captured by more than 850 surveillance cameras. The fixed solution follows an earlier decision to use March Networks mobile video recording technology on Gautrain passenger rail cars as part of a jointly-developed offering from Bombardier Transportation.

The second project, for the City of Johannesburg Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), will see Basix install more than 600 VideoSphere IP cameras and networked recorders to support centralized live monitoring capabilities across the agency's city-wide network of stations and depots. The solution also includes powerful VideoSphere SiteManager software for remote management and administration.

Basix Technologies, a March Networks solutions provider, is recognized for its expertise in the design and installation of intelligent transportation systems. Most recently, the company provided South Africa's national roads agency with a comprehensive highway surveillance solution that included advanced March Networks digital video management and a state-of-the-art video wall for live monitoring.

"During this time of rapid development in South Africa, it is essential that we provide our customers with reliable surveillance solutions that can address immediate requirements and scale easily to support additional growth," said Jeff Groenewald, managing director of Basix Technologies. "March Networks' VideoSphere portfolio delivers the flexibility and proven performance required for transportation and other critical infrastructure environments, and we look forward to partnering with them on these and future projects."

"Transportation agencies around the world are beginning to invest in advanced IP video solutions that can manage the diversity of their fixed and mobile infrastructure," said Fabrizio Colciago, March Networks' managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "Through our VideoSphere portfolio, and strong partnerships with solutions providers such as Basix, March Networks is uniquely positioned to address this growing trend and we expect to expand our global transportation business further in the months ahead."
