A Look Back At ISC West

A full week after ISC West came to a close, neither my Las Vegas-induced head cold nor the excitement of the tradeshow has receded. The three days were a blur of new products and news announcements, press events and the cramped show floor.

It’s literally too much to cover, but here are a few more random tidbits from the conference.

FLIR Systems released the Thermal Fence, a perimeter alert system that combines thermal cameras, a full array of intrusion detectors and a connectivity/analytics software package. The fascinating result is a solution that gives users both threat detection and assessment capability at the same time.

Using FLIR’s IP thermal security cameras, the system really does create a “thermal fence.” And with instant, automated threat detection and visual threat assessment capability, it seems like a good fit for critical infrastructure, petro-chemical facilities, nuclear facilities, commercial campuses or even residential installations.

Across the show floor, Panasonic System Networks Co. was introducing a new point-of-sale solution that has the most user-friendly integrated surveillance system I’ve ever seen. The company partnered with Quadrox and Aloha Data Systems to combine POS with video analytics, which lets store owners or managers search and retrieve key loss-prevention metrics and access video from transactions of interest. It’s as easy as typing in the amount of a suspicious transaction; the video pops up immediately.

Speaking of intelligent surveillance and search capabilities, 3VR was another company with big news at ISC West. The group released its SmartRecorder Serverclass 100, a hybrid video recorder and management system that is said to be more powerful and flexible than other similar products. The solution also can be scaled up for larger installations, like transportation and infrastructure applications.

Finally, Dedicated Micros introduced its Integrated Camera Recording technology, the Infiniti integrated PTZ camera, the EcoSense and SD Advanced DVRs, and the CamVu mini-dome series. The EcoSense DVRs are hitting the market at the perfect time; since they’re designed to be as affordable as possible, they’re sure to be an attractive entry-level solution for all those cash-strapped small businesses out there.

With that, I’ll wrap up my coverage of another successful show. See you in Dallas for ASIS this October!

  • Evolving Cybersecurity Strategies

Organizations are increasingly turning their attention to human-focused security approaches, as two out of three (68%) cybersecurity incidents involve people. Threat actors are shifting from targeting networks and systems to hacking humans via social engineering methods, living off human errors as their most prevalent attack vector. Whether manipulated or not, human cyber behavior is leveraged to gain backdoor access into systems. This mainly results from a lack of employee training and awareness about evolving attack techniques employed by malign actors. Read Now
