ObjectVideo Supports International Weapons Security Teams

Sandia National Laboratories' International Nuclear Security Engineering department is using ObjectVideo's OV6 video analytics software for training purposes. The department works to reduce weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and terrorism threats to U.S. national security through international technical cooperation.

OV6 is an integral component of the Sandia training and demonstration system that highlights the security technologies required to protect critical resources and international weapons systems. The work is taking place at the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM.

The system deployed at Sandia is a fully integrated intrusion detection, access control and video management security solution. ObjectVideo technology partner Open Roads Consulting, Inc. provides the video system backbone with its Video Image Control and Display System (VICADS™), a video-over-IP distribution and management platform.

"Our goal is to help the international community protect critical assets and reduce threats," said Dominic Martinez, manager of Sandia's International Nuclear Security Engineering department.

"ObjectVideo is very pleased that our new OV6 software was chosen as the video analytics component for this very important international security program," said Raul Fernandez, ObjectVideo chairman and CEO. "And we are proud our industry leadership has helped pave the way for technology innovations to play an increased role in making our world safer."

"We appreciate being able to partner with ObjectVideo on the integration of OV6 into VICADS," said Joseph Cardyn, vice president of Open Roads Consulting, Inc. "These combined technologies play a vital role in securing critical assets and protecting our national interest."

The OV6 Analytics Service™ is an Intel-based video analytics offering designed to enable a more turnkey-style implementation of one or more video analytics processes within network video recorders (NVR), video management systems (VMS) and other enterprise PC-based applications and hardware. OV6 utilizes the highly optimized ObjectVideo OnBoard® library for Intel®, enabling very high video analytic channel densities (up to 64 channels per processor, depending upon configuration) and more scalable video analytics-enabled solutions.

As the 30th anniversary of the IP camera approaches in 2026, it is worth reflecting on how far we have come. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
