Safety Tips for Walking to School

As we find ourselves in the midst of a new school year, it is important that children across the country get to school safely. Considering many children walk to school, here are a few things for your children to keep in mind to ensure they get to school safe and sound.

First, it goes without saying, but make sure your children do not talk to or go anywhere with strangers. Make sure they know which relatives and family friends are okay to talk to. Remember that students should never walk alone, so the old idea of the Buddy System still rings true. Do everything possible to avoid shortcuts, as visibility is crucial. Teach your children to be alert, and report any suspicious activity or persons to a trusted adult or their teachers. As parents, it is critical to provide your children with the important phone numbers they need – whether it is your cell phone and work phone number, of the number of a trusted family friend or relative. Children should always be on time, and notify their parents if for any reason they will be late. If parents work late, have your children call you as soon as they get home so you will know they’re safe.

All parents want to make sure their children are free from harm’s way, especially when it means making it to school. With these simple safety tips, you can ensure your children will get to school in a safe and timely manner.
