NYC Marathon Increases Security In Wake of Terror Attack

NYPD to increase NYC Marathon security following terror attack in Lower Manhattan

Enhanced security measures will be in place for the TCS New York City Marathon this Sunday in the wake of the terror attack in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday.

The marathon is expected to bring out 51,000 runners and 2.5 million spectators this weekend. Security concerns are heightened after eight people were killed and eleven injured Tuesday after a rented truck was driven down a West Side bike path.

NYPD Chief Carlos Gomez detailed the increased security measures in a press conference Wednesday morning: “It’s going to be a very safe event. We’ve added more sand trucks, more blocker vehicles — it will be the most-ever deployed at this event. We’ve more than doubled our rooftop observations posts as well as our counter sniper teams from the Emergency Services Unit throughout the boroughs, not just here in Manhattan.”

In addition, there will be aviation patrols surveying rooftops and K-9 units and uniformed, plainclothes and counterterrorism officers patrolling the 26-mile marathon route.

Mayor Bill de Blasio stressed that not all security measures will be visible.

“You’ll see some things. Other things you won’t see that are protecting us. But we’re confident it will go off as planned, and it will be safe,” de Blasio said.
