Spokane Considers Incentives for Downtown Security Measures

The City of Spokane is looking into rewarding businesses that invest in additional security measures for their properties.

A Washington City is considering offering incentives to downtown businesses that opt-in to more security measures.

The Spokane City Council is looking into how the city could give rebates for money spend on surveillance cameras, lighting and other security improvements on downtown properties.

City Councilman Breean Beggs said the measure would reward people for investing in safety measures and let owners decide which ones are best for their property.

The plan has the backing of the Downtown Spokane Partnership, which collects annual fees totaling more than $1 million to fund services that include street cleaning, event support and security.

If the full city council approves the plan, $26,000 would be made available to support security efforts.
