SIA Supports Commonsense Legislation Addressing Facial Recognition

As part of a larger technology package produced by the House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) recently introduced H.R. 6929, the Advancing Facial Recognition Act, which requires the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Commerce and other appropriate agencies to complete a comprehensive study on facial recognition technologies, including the collection of information to increase transparency regarding use of the technology across federal departments and agencies.

If passed, the legislation would also focus on identifying sectors using facial recognition technology, available public-private partnerships, how industry uses facial recognition, making recommendations relating to the mitigation of global supply chain risks and development of a national strategy on its development. SIA offered its support for H.R. 6929 and hopes Congress will address its thoughtful approach.
