Athena Security Launches Radar Weapons Screening System

The new system uses non-ionizing imaging radar technology to help security teams screen bags, boots and lower legs in real time.

A new weapons screening system aims to change how security teams handle secondary checkpoints at high-traffic venues, schools and hospitals.

Athena Security announced the release of its Secondary Screening WDS, a walkthrough solution that uses advanced, non-ionizing imaging radar technology. The system is designed to help security officers screen bags, footwear and lower-body concealment areas in real time without halting the primary flow of foot traffic.

The technology functions as a dedicated downstream station positioned near primary walkthrough weapons detection systems or artificial intelligence-assisted X-ray baggage scanners. When a primary system triggers an alert, officers can direct the individual to the secondary area. This workflow is designed to maintain entry throughput while allowing security teams to conduct additional screening and automatically document compliance outcomes.

The system utilizes imaging radar sensors to generate live data during the secondary check. Visitors walk through the area or pause briefly between panels while officers review the live feed on an Apple iPad or a large-format monitor. Security personnel can also rotate bags beside the unit to capture multiple viewing perspectives of layered items.

The software includes built-in Department of Homeland Security-informed workflow guidance to standardize screening procedures across security operations. The system integrates into the company's broader entryway security ecosystem, which includes visitor management systems and AI-assisted baggage scanners.
