Automatic Doors Drive Greater Building Inclusion

The American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers urges building owners to prioritize accessible entrances during Disability Pride Month.

In recognition of Disability Pride Month in July, the American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers is urging architects, specifiers and building owners to prioritize accessible entrances. The initiative aims to ensure individuals can enter public facilities safely and independently.

Automatic doors serve a vital role in establishing accessible environments for millions of Americans. Beneficiaries include individuals utilizing mobility aids, older adults, veterans, people with temporary injuries, parents with strollers and those carrying packages or medical equipment.

Industry experts note that a building's entrance establishes the tone for the entire public experience. Allowing individuals to enter independently without maneuvering heavy manual doors or requiring assistance reinforces dignity and equal participation in public spaces.

The push for universal access expanded significantly following the adoption of the 2021 International Building Code. The code introduced new mandates requiring automatic doors at the entrances of public buildings that meet specific occupancy thresholds. The manufacturers association collaborated with accessibility advocates during the development process to advance these provisions.

The 2021 regulations mark a shift by formally recognizing automatic doors as a critical component of accessible public entrances. As state and local jurisdictions continue to adopt new building codes, industry stakeholders are encouraged to monitor local implementation timelines and specific requirements.
