TEPCO Centralizes Video Security Across 1600 Sites

More than 30,000 cameras will operate through a unified system supporting remote monitoring, incident response and equipment management.

Japan’s TEPCO Power Grid has deployed Genetec Security Center to centralize video surveillance across 1,600 substations and service centers in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

The system will manage more than 30,000 cameras as part of the utility company’s effort to modernize physical security operations and critical infrastructure management.

TEPCO Power Grid oversees electricity delivery infrastructure throughout greater Tokyo. Growth in the number of cameras and monitored locations created a need for a single system capable of supporting security teams across the utility’s distributed facilities.

Security Center consolidates camera models from multiple manufacturers into one management environment. Its software development kit also allows TEPCO Power Grid to customize the system and connect additional technologies as operational requirements change.

Regional teams can now add cameras and update facility maps rather than relying on a central office to perform those tasks. The system can also identify camera malfunctions across the network, helping personnel locate equipment requiring attention.

Authorized employees can view video through computers and mobile devices. During emergencies, managers and field personnel can use the remote access capabilities to assess conditions and coordinate a response.

TEPCO Power Grid is also evaluating how stored video, image analysis and artificial intelligence could support future security and operational functions.
