Financial Institutions Face Security Risks From AI Traffic Bypasses

New survey shows four in five financial firms detected malicious bots spoofing legitimate AI assistant identities to breach perimeter defenses.

A vast majority of financial institutions are struggling to secure their networks against malicious bots disguised as legitimate artificial intelligence tools, according to new research from device intelligence company Fingerprint.

In a survey of 300 U.S. financial services leaders, 79% reported detecting malicious bots or scrapers bypassing perimeter security by spoofing the identities of search crawlers or authorized AI assistants.

The security gaps stem from a fundamental shift in web traffic patterns. While 95% of executives reported an increase in automated traffic over the past 12 months, 61% of financial organizations still rely on traditional client-side JavaScript tags or native software development kits to detect automated visitors.

Because modern AI agents and assistants frequently operate through browserless HTTP requests rather than traditional web browsers, they bypass client-side code execution entirely. This creates significant operational blind spots for legacy security stacks, leaving only 26% of respondents with full visibility into automated traffic that avoids JavaScript execution.

Less than half of respondents — 45% — reported successfully detecting and mitigating spoofed AI traffic incidents in real time.

Beyond immediate security vulnerabilities, the lack of visibility presents significant regulatory challenges. According to the survey, 70% of financial organizations stated they cannot guarantee consumer data privacy compliance unless their security infrastructure can verify automated traffic at the HTTP level.

Despite these risks, simple blanket blocks on automated traffic carry financial drawbacks. Forty percent of executives expressed concern that blocking legitimate consumer AI assistants would cause user friction, driving clients to competing institutions.

To address these vulnerabilities, organizations are shifting security investments toward backend and network-edge protections. Nearly half of respondents, 46%, said upgrading application security to support identification deployed at the edge without requiring JavaScript is an active or funded priority over the next 12 months. Additionally, 32% identified real-time IP-range and Domain Name System verification for AI provider networks as a top priority for the coming year.

Complete survey methodology and detailed findings are available in the full Fingerprint analysis.
