Three students and one teacher were killed and two people were injured in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, according to AP News.
The victims included a 5-year-old child, an 8-year-old, an 11-year-old and one teacher. Two others, a 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher, were in critical condition and transported to a hospital.
The 16-year-old suspect, a Bend resident, was found dead inside the school. The New York Times identified the shooter as John J. Griffin II, citing an unnamed law enforcement official.
He was shot by Kaylub Giamanco, a parent of two students at the school, AP News reported. Giamanco followed the suspect into Silver Rail Elementary School after noticing him enter the building. He then “engaged” the suspect, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said in a press conference.
At 12:59 p.m., a person outside the building in a vehicle called 911 after reportedly being shot at multiple times by someone with a long gun.
Additional 911 calls were received in the minutes that followed, reporting a shooter entering the school.
At 1 p.m., dispatch notified law enforcement. At 1:01 p.m., officers told the school to go into lockdown. At 1:02 p.m., the first officers arrived at the elementary school. “Moments later,” Krantz said, an officer reported the suspect had been shot.
Bend is about 120 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon.
This is a developing story.
