FAA Restricts Border Drones to Counter Cartel Threats

New FAA flight limits clear airspace along the US-Mexico border to help military laser systems target cartel drones.

Federal aviation regulators have instituted a ban on unauthorized drone flights along the U.S. border with Mexico to counter drug cartel surveillance and smuggling operations, according to a report by Reuters.

The temporary flight restriction from the Federal Aviation Administration prohibits all unauthorized unmanned aircraft activity up to 400 feet above ground level, extending one nautical mile north of the international boundary.

Defense officials report more than 1,000 drone incursions along the southern border each month, as cartels increasingly utilize small aircraft to monitor border patrol operations and drop illicit drug packages into U.S. territory, the publication reported.

Reuters further stated that the restricted zone provides defense and border agencies greater operational space to deploy counter-drone technology. Earlier this year, the FAA and the Department of Defense authorized the use of high-energy laser systems along the southern border to disable intruding aircraft.

The deployment of laser technologies along the border has previously generated agency coordination challenges. Unannounced laser operations by Customs and Border Protection led to a brief temporary flight halt at El Paso International Airport while safety reviews were completed. In a separate incident, military laser systems targeting border incursions accidentally destroyed a CBP surveillance drone near Fort Hancock, Texas, according to the outlet.

Government officials confirmed that counter-drone laser operations remain restricted strictly to the southern border corridor and are not deployed near major domestic airports or national capital infrastructure.
