Three Charged In Massive Artificial Intelligence Impersonation Scheme

Federal prosecutors unseal charges against three foreign nationals in a $129 million executive voice cloning fraud scheme.

Federal authorities have unsealed an indictment charging three foreign nationals with operating a multinational fraud scheme that used artificial intelligence to impersonate corporate executives and steal more than $129 million from global enterprises.

The defendants face federal charges including wire fraud conspiracy, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering. Law enforcement authorities arrested two of the suspects in Spain and the third in the United Kingdom, with formal extradition proceedings underway.

According to court filings, the criminal enterprise targeted corporate staff by deploying synthetic media to clone the voices and visual likenesses of company chief executive officers. Scammers instructed employees to assist on confidential financial transactions before directing them to liaise with outside counsel at prominent international law firms.

The conspirators then impersonated those external attorneys using cloned audio and scripted dialogue designed to discourage staff from consulting colleagues. Convinced the requests came from executive leadership and legal counsel, employees wired corporate funds to overseas accounts controlled by the syndicate.

Court documents detail significant losses across various sectors, including:

  • $11.5 million from a United Kingdom financial technology firm
  • $5.2 million from a Florida pet food company
  • $4.8 million from a Missouri hospital system
  • $4.6 million from a Massachusetts mutual fund
  • $2.9 million from a California hospital system
  • $2.6 million from a Rhode Island bank

Federal investigators stated the stolen capital was wired to accounts across Europe, Asia and the Middle East before being converted into cryptocurrency to conceal the financial trail.

The prosecution is being handled by the Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Spain's Policía Nacional and the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency.
