Milestone, Hikvision Establish Partnership

Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd., a supplier of digital video surveillance products with headquarters in China, recently announced a partnership with Milestone Systems, a developer of open platform IP video management software.

The partner agreement was signed in Shanghai, China in October by Zhiping Zhou, Hikvision’s vice president of International Business, and Lars Thinggaard, president and CEO of Milestone Systems, with the presence of Danish Prime Minster Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Rasmussen was in Shanghai to advance the cooperation between China and Denmark in business and climate-related issues.

Through this partnership, Hikvision’s IP surveillance products, such as network cameras and multi-purpose digital video servers, will be compatible with the Milestone XProtect IP video management platform. Hikvision will then introduce the XProtect platform into the Chinese surveillance market, with an eye to expanding it later on for customers worldwide.

“Though Hikvision’s IP video surveillance products are newly introduced to the market, we have received numerous positive feedbacks, and have seen a great potential in the booming IP surveillance market,” Zhou said. “The partnership with Milestone is definitely one of the major steps for us to provide a higher value in the video surveillance industry. With the integration of Hikvision’s high-performance IP video surveillance products with Milestone’s powerful, reliable and highly scalable video management software, the market will be able to enjoy solutions that meet various requirements from diversified and critical security applications.”

“Milestone Systems is a company in continuing fast growth, so China -- and Asia in general -- is one of the important regions where we want to strengthen our presence,” Thinggaard said. “The Chinese market without a doubt represents huge potential and will be a natural place to have representation in relation to our partner network in all of the Asian market. The Milestone partner agreement with Hikvision is a big step on the way to increase our footprint in the Chinese business landscape.”

Milestone will co-exhibit with Hikvision at the Beijing Security show in the beginning of December.

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
