Sports Museum Of Los Angeles Protected By D-Link IP Video Technology

Babe Ruth's record-breaking home run bat, Lou Gehrig's uniform jacket and a ball hit by Joe DiMaggio during his historic 56-game hitting streak. These are among the 10,000 priceless memorabilia that require the highest level of security protection at the Sports Museum of Los Angeles, the largest known private collection of iconic sports artifacts, collectibles and memorabilia in the United States, located in downtown Los Angeles.

With so many treasured items on display at the 32,000-square-foot Sports Museum of LA, representing baseball, basketball, football, tennis, boxing, golf, swimming and horse racing, Information Technology Manager Sal Martinez wanted to install the most sophisticated but affordable surveillance system he could find.

What he wanted was a system that would allow museum security guards to monitor visitors, the valued artifacts, exit doors and public areas, while serving as a visible deterrent to avoid theft and vandalism. Despite budget concerns, he was looking for cameras with specific features, such as high video quality and clarity, management software, motion detection to conserve resources when not in use, sound capture, digital zoom, and the ability to lower resolution to conserve disk space.

What Martinez found was D-Link, a provider of computer networking solutions for businesses and consumers. Working with D-Link reseller, Computer 1 Products of America in South El Monte, Calif., Martinez selected a system that offered the features he required at a price that fit his budget.

The museum opted for 88 D-Link 2-Way Audio Internet Cameras (DCS-3220) and the same number of D-Link Power over Ethernet Adapters (DWL-P50) to capture every angle of the 32,000-square-foot structure.

"We shopped around and saw demonstrations of different cameras from other manufacturers," he said. "From an implementation and cost perspective, D-Link had the upper edge D-Link's D-ViewCam™ software that is bundled with the cameras is priceless. We installed the system in about a week -- everything works great."
