University Of Delaware Partners With Motorola Solutions To Deploy Video Security System

The Motorola Solutions business of Motorola Inc.  recently announced a partnership with the University of Delaware (UD) to deploy an advanced video security solution that helps promote a safe and healthy learning environment by significantly enhancing visibility to campus incidents. The system incorporates campus-wide video surveillance, access control, asset management and a command-and-control center to address the university's need for a comprehensive solution that helps improve situational awareness, tactical response and incident management capabilities.

"The University of Delaware is proactively developing new crime reduction and safety strategies that use leading-edge technologies to provide force multipliers to enhance campus safety," said Skip Homiak, executive director of campus and public safety. "The objective is to maximize our police department resources to provide optimized security for faculty, students, staff and visitors, as well as citizens of Newark, where the university is located. Motorola recommended and is implementing a solution to deliver the interoperability and collaboration needed to give our campus and public safety personnel access to intuitive, real-time video information for faster and better outcomes to campus incidents and crime deterrence."

Ensuring the safety and security of a campus population of 20,500 students and more than 3,500 staff is a key challenge for the university. Motorola proposed an open-architecture security framework that enables current and new technologies to communicate with one another, while integrating disparate technologies into a single situation-management platform.

Leveraging Motorola's high-speed point-to-multipoint wireless broadband network to extend the reach and expand the capabilities of UD's existing fiber network, the platform incorporates content from business partners including VidSys for physical security information management (PSIM) and situation management, RadiantRFID for asset management and tracking, and Convergint Technologies for security products and service integration.

"VidSys is happy to be working with Motorola and their partners to enable the integration of information and technology across multiple organizations, facilitating effective collaboration and communication, and ultimately providing UD with a comprehensive safety and security solution that addresses their specific challenges and objectives," said Eric Sansonetti, vice president, worldwide sales with VidSys.  "We look forward to jointly creating a new standard for campus safety."

At the core of the solution is a powerful, standards-based, command-and-control application that correlates activities from sensors, cameras and existing infrastructure components to bring enhanced response and analytic capabilities for increased visibility across campus. The platform enables the integration of existing and new video, RFID access control and asset-management solutions to create a single approach to manage different systems. This approach minimizes the need to manually monitor individual components and creates system synergies that increase operational efficiencies. The result is an easy-to-use system that correlates location, incident type and responding personnel to provide relevant and real-time information to first responders for better situational awareness and optimized command and control response.

The system offers video surveillance in high-traffic campus areas, with coverage expanding to student housing located on the fringes of UD's campus, where it is often difficult to provide a continuous security presence and crime deterrence. Working collaboratively with UD to optimize its existing security and communications infrastructure, the solution also provides a platform to integrate future advances in technology.

"Motorola is excited for the opportunity to partner with UD and help facilitate new policing strategies that leverage the latest technologies to help enable a more secure learning environment," said Wayne Eveland, director of business development for integrated command and control, Motorola Solutions. "Our campus security solution provides UD with a single platform for incident detection and response, integrating best practices from across the industry to meet the university's needs today and in the future."

Through this relationship, Motorola will also partner with the university's department of electrical engineering to provide laboratory technology resources that enable students and faculty to conduct research that improves campus safety, while advancing the education curriculum.

The increased sophistication of cyber threats pumped by the relentless use of AI and machine learning brings forth record-breaking statistics. Cyberattacks grew 44% YoY in 2024, with a weekly average of 1,673 cyberattacks per organization. While organizations up their security game to help thwart these attacks, a critical question remains: Can employees identify a threat when they come across one? A Confidence Gap survey reveals that 86% of employees feel confident in their ability to identify phishing attempts. But things are not as rosy as they appear; the more significant part of the report finds this confidence misplaced. Read Now
