HID Global, Wincor Nixdorf Develop ATM Solution With Integrated Contactless Smart Card Reader

HID Global and Wincor Nixdorf recently announced they have developed an ATM solution with an integrated contactless smart card reader. The jointly developed solution enables a single piece of equipment to process ATM and automatic fare collection transactions, enhancing customer convenience and efficiency.

HID Global and Wincor Nixdorf have worked with a leading international bank to design and develop the new, converged solution, which adds HID’s widely interoperable cashless payment reader technology to Wincor Nixdorf’s proven ProCash ATM platform. HID’s readers enable the Wincor Nixdorf ATM system to support the Calypso transit card protocol and DESFire contactless smart card technology, plus MIFARE contactless smart cards to meet future banking requirements. The system is designed to improve efficiency and cut costs for transit authorities and banks while offering greater convenience for consumers, increasing customer loyalty.

"Utilizing an existing ATM network, a transit authority has an ideal means of developing its presence throughout the network,” said Thierry Gonnot, business development, banking division, with Wincor Nixdorf. “For retail banks, the ATMs allow them to offer a new service to customers, thereby contributing to the profitability of the network. Transit riders in urban or rural areas gain easy access to the new service everywhere."

HID Global will demonstrate the jointly developed ProCash ATM and fare collection system at CARTES & IDentification 2010, December 7-9, 2010, at hall 3 stand #2 in the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre in Paris. The system also will be presented at an exhibitor workshop on Wednesday, December 8, entitled, “Interoperability Across Various Payment Schemes.” The workshop will explore the benefits of supporting closed- and open-loop payment schemes plus all major contactless technologies and protocols in a single system.

“Historically, it has been difficult for payment and ticketing system manufacturers to offer a single reader solution that simultaneously supports closed-loop payment schemes and open-loop debit/credit card schemes on the same reader platform, so that transit riders can, for instance, use an ATM to add funds to a transit pass using a closed-loop fare payment system,” said René van Ryt, vice president of Cashless Payment with HID Global. “HID’s fully interoperable, multi-functional cashless payment reader platform delivers this capability. By adding our reader technology to Wincor Nixdorf’s ATM platform, the two companies have created a converged solution with some truly exciting benefits for transit riders and operators.”

Wincor Nixdorf collaborated with HID to complete rigorous qualifications and certifications for its new ATM and cashless payment platform, while also meeting the demanding expectations of its leading banking and transit customers. The HID reader platform includes full CE and FCC modular approvals, and is backed by comprehensive developer resources to accelerate certification and time to market for finished solutions. The readers support all popular card technologies including MIFARE, MIFARE DESFire and a broad range of protocols and payment schemes including Calypso and EMVCo, and all major operating systems.

“We are extremely excited to be offering a solution that will create new revenue opportunities for banks and transit operators while giving transit riders the convenience of a single card for fare payment and debit transactions,” Gonnot said. “HID Global made it very easy for us to complete the global implementation process, and its powerful multi-technology reader platform ensures that we can easily adapt to new standards and requirements. With HID reader technology, we can continue to add powerful features and capabilities to our proven ATM platforms in the future.”
