National Cyber Security Alliance Elects New Board Officers

The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) has announced new officers elected to its board of directors for 2011. John Havermann, vice president and director of cyber programs at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), will serve as NCSA board president.

"Cybersecurity education and awareness have emerged as a national priority thanks to the leadership of the National Cyber Security Alliance over the past decade," Havermann said. "I look forward to guiding NCSA's board of directors this year as we develop research studies, programs and outreach initiatives to spread the message about online safety and security to all digital citizens."

In leading the board, Havermann is joined by new NCSA board secretary Jacqueline Beauchere, director of Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft, and new NCSA board treasurer Christopher Boyer, assistant vice president of public policy at AT&T.

Over the past year, NCSA has benefited from an active board that brings experience and wisdom from a diverse set of companies. Its board membership has nearly doubled since 2009, with companies such as PayPal, Visa and Lockheed Martin adding representatives to the full board roster, which includes:

  • Michael Barrett, vice president and chief information security officer, PayPal
  • Lori Bush, senior advisor to the critical infrastructure assurance group, Cisco
  • Roland Cloutier, vice president and chief security officer, ADP
  • Francie Coulter, director of worldwide consumer public relations, McAfee
  • Charles Croom, vice president of cyber security solutions, Lockheed Martin
  • Eric Davis, global public policy manager, Google
  • Rosetta Jones, head of issues management and public affairs, Visa
  • Shannon Kellogg, senior director of government affairs and public policy, EMC
  • Lora Phillips, senior manager of global employee engagement, Symantec
  • Marcus Sachs, vice president of national security policy, Verizon Communications
  • Nadia Short, vice president, strategy and business development, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems
  • Joe Sullivan, chief security officer, Facebook

"Our board leadership is critical to the success of NCSA, our public outreach and education efforts, and I am grateful for the support of our outgoing and new board officers," said NCSA Executive Director Michael Kaiser. "National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2010 was perhaps our most impactful year ever – through our board's guidance, coupled with industry and government partnerships, we were able to reach more than 100 million people around the world."

Last year proved a successful year for NCSA and cybersecurity education and awareness. NCSA, along with the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, launched the first industry-government coordinated public message for online safety: STOP. THINK. CONNECT.

NCSA also led National Cyber Security Awareness Month, a public awareness campaign, endorsed in a presidential proclamation by President Obama, supported by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt. Other government leaders, members of industry, business and civil society also played active roles in spreading the word about online safety and security throughout October.
